You were born and you opened your eyes, and mine.
I asked if you were breathing, even though you were crying. Your father looked confused but I had to hear it. I had to hear someone say it. You were alive.
I'd never held a daughter alive before.
It's been one year and I still can't believe them. I still can't believe you're real. Maybe when you're three and you start asking me why the sky is blue, or maybe when you read me your first book. Perhaps when you're 13 and you roll your eyes and slam the door or when you're 19 and you move into your first apartment...
Or maybe never, because you're too perfect, too undeserved. Maybe you'll always feel like a dream, and maybe that's okay.
